the owls from iittala were designed by oiva tokkia, who was trained by famous finish glass artist kaj franck. for almost 40 years, toikka has created the birds collection for iittala. his limitless imagination and knowledge of glass has made it possible to create numerous small miracles of life, sought after by collectors globally. each bird is individually mouth blown and thus as unique as the individuals who purchase them.
toikka’s rich and bold glass birds are simple reminders of the poetry in everyday life and deviate greatly from the streamlined aesthetic typical of nordic design. his visions are brought to life by craftsmen at the nuutajärvi factory in finland, where the iittala glass workshops have always been located. glass blowers work in teams of up to five to create a single bird. the glass is melted in a furnace at 1400° celsius, and the melting process alone takes approximately 15 hours. in addition, each bird is signed ‘o. toikka nuutajärvi’ as proof of authenticity.
