produced by marcel wanders & moooi, the foam bowl was initially designed for droog design. the quality of porcelain is best reflected through its fine and thin character. it's hard to get these kind of shapes or qaulity by using molds.
marcel wanders developed a technique to produce porcelain objects without the use of plaster molds when making the sponge vase. for that vase, a natural sponge was taken and dipped in fluid porcelain clay. the clay impregnated the sponge and, after drying, the porcelain-impregnated sponge was fired in a regular ceramic oven. the sponge disappeared and the porcelain perfectly copied the fine shapes of the sponge.
this process was developed further to make porcelain products with pre-shaped artificial foam. the foam bowl is a fine example of the great possibilities of this technique.
