designed by adrian olabuenaga, the shiro pencil/pen holder is a tribute to shiro kuramata, one of japan’s most important designers of the twentieth century. the top ring gives the illusion that it’s floating while it’s actually welded onto an acme ‘pencil’. adrian olabuenaga co-founded acme with his wife lesley bailey. originally from buenos aires, olabuenaga grew up in los angeles where he has been inspired by architecture, art, & design from an early age. his medium is primarily functional art such as furniture, jewelry, pens, etc. & his first solo show was in 1983. olabuenaga is the ceo and creative director for acme studios, creating designs not only for acme but for boeing, disney, mercedes, warner bros., among others.
acme studios is internationally known for their collectible pens – they were the first company to make printed pens, giving them endless possibilities for new designs. since founded in 1985, acme has branched into different products such as personal accessories, wallets, watches & jewelry, along with their unique assortment of writing tools. these collections are the result of collaborations with many well-known designers from all different backgrounds & specializations, giving acme special status in the design industry.
