the phrena pendant was designed by karl zahn for artecnica, his first collaboration with them. upon manipulation this perfectly flat light fixture transforms into a beautiful 3-D shade. inspired from the ‘simplicity of opening a book, the pages of this light work together to create perfect symmetry.’ artecnica’s use of white tyvek once again creates a glow that adds a warmth to any environment. can be configured for either up or down-lighting distribution. made with a steel interior frame coated with tyvek®white.
zahn explains part of his unique method to green design – ’in designing anything, the creator must be aware of the life of the object; not only its intended use but its inception, creation, & afterlife. the things we make today will still be around long after their intended use. one approach to save ourselves from our mass of consumables is to ‘think green’ and recycle & reuse. that only works if the object is worth recycling or reusing…while i follow eco-criteria for material selection and manufacture process i try to add something that most designers do not: emotional relationship.’
