designed by hans harald rath for lobmeyr in 1952, the alpha glassware series fits snugly into the hand and was inspired by a copper beaker from the middle ages. the 'alpha beaker' was very much a product of the 1950s, stackable & ideal for young families who need products that are both elegant and practical. alpha is made of the thinnest muslin glass & is hand blown into wooden molds. named after the finely woven french fabric, muslin glass is crystal blown to a thickness of only .7 – 1.1 mm. it appears delicate, but is remarkably resilient thanks to its inner elasticity & formal construction. the stackable water tumblers, cocktail tumblers, and water pitcher are available in citrin, rosaline, amethyst, light blue, light green, grey, & black; everything else is available in clear only.
’the fascination about glass? it is one of the oldest materials mankind understood to shape. imagine: you melt some sand & look at the result.’-- ted muehling
the fascination for crystal has been the driving force behind lobmeyr for almost 200 years. through six generations the properties of crystal have been tested & researched and its handling & forming properties explored. whether it’s wafer thin muslin glass or glass that owes its shape to cutting – lobmeyr reinstates the beauty of this omnipresent material, bringing elegance & refinement back to everday life.
