royal copenhagen is a danish company that has been producing high-quality porcelain since 1775. it was founded as a result of experiments on hard porcelain done by Frantz Heinrich Mueller and funded through a partnership with the royal family until 1868 when the company passed into private ownership. royal copenhagen today is a producer of craftsmanship and design with a contemporary international profile, selling products that are both functional and collectible.
beginning production in 2007, hard porcelain meets soft silicone in royal copenhagen’s contrast series, designed by Hans Christian Gjedde. it is quite deliberately both traditional and innovative in its idiom. the fluted porcelain dates back to 1775, while silicone is a new material for the porcelain factory. the generous size of the contrast cup contrasts with the subdued pastels, and masculine meets feminine when black and amethyst are put on the table together.
