this three-legged chair by hans j. wegner was first introduced in 1963. a few limited series were produced, but the project soon came to a halt. the shell chair was relaunched in 1997 by a manufacturer who was fortunatly able to keep down the costs. carl hansen & son bring us a breakthrough which took 34 years from its initial introduction. in 1999, an original from the 1960's sold for over $20,000 at a christies auction in london.
wegner experimented with curving the wood in three dimensions to form the seat. it was inspired by the curvacious bends of a wraught iron balcony, as shown.
available in four different types of wood: ash, walnut, oak, and beech.
