forbidden _fruit.mgx, by dan yeffet, is an order of magnitude more complex than any bowl we’ve seen. this forbidden fruit isn’t solid, but rather is made of all the things that make it forbidden, words like “soft”, “sweet,” “tender,” “smooth,” “juicy”… you get the picture.
airy and delicate designs like this bowl made possible because of rapid prototyping. products are designed on 3D software and then built up, bit by bit, in a stereolithography machine, which is basically a vat of liquid resin and a ultraviolet laser that hardens the resin in precise patterns. rapid prototyping allows materialise to realize designs that would be difficult or impossible to make with other manufacturing processes, like forbidden fruit. the lettering is small and relatively delicate; it would probably never survive the hurly-burly of traditional manufacturing.
you may be wondering why materialise products are named with the *.mgx extension? *.mgx is the file extension for materialise's proprietary software. each product produced by materialise is rendered from a unique *.mgx file which accompanies your product on a cd rom. you can reproduce your product by sending the *.mgx file back to materialise.
