architect zaha hadid herself has said that she doesn’t like “nice” designs. she likes something unfinished and raw in her designs. you can see this in this sketchbook, designed by her. the covers are raw cardboard with an angled cut, suggesting the swooping modernism of the fifties and sixties - or the vitra fire station on the back of the band circling the cover. (the angled cut also makes it easier to shove in your pocket, while giving you plenty of real estate to write on)
but don’t expect to find hadid’s wisdom or sketches between the covers of this notebook. the pages are blank, ready to accept your sketches and wisdom. it’s a fitting repository for your thoughts. as the back cover says, “zaha hadid relies entirely on her own idea to deteriminate the limits of what is possible, extending these limits farther and farther, continuing in the almost forgotten tradition of “modernity”: the experiment becomes an integral part of the creative process, in which building is regarded as a technological as well as social experiment.”
