the tower of babel by tony wurman is… well, we’ve never seen anything like it before, and keep in mind that we sell
a lot of vases.
the tower of babel is incredibly organic: a cylinder swallowed by vines and leaves – or, if you’re in a morbid mood, serpents and tentacles.
yet there’s order in the chaos. there’s the suggestion of ramps and courses twisting up the vase. this regularity fools the eye and mind. the vines suddenly suggest of ancient frescoes or bas reliefs. screaming faces seem to appear out of the tangle before dissolving back into a disturbing, sensual riot. we honestly could see this vase gracing the mantle of anton lavey, were he still alive.
believe it or not, all this imagery and illusion is made possible with hotmelt glue, specifically a special formula of nontoxic EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) hotmelt adhesive. wurman has used EVA adhesive to create vases before, but we’ve never sold anything from him with this kind of complexity or sensuousness. it’s a surprise to us, and a welcome one.
