this limited edition miniature (measuring 34" x 7" x 4" and weighing approximately 13 pounds) of the iconic chrysler building in new york city is a must-have for any new york city history buff, architecture buff, or anyone else who appreciates the relevance of this historic design.
the chrysler building is an iconic symbol standing 1,046 feet high. a great example of art deco architecture, its ornamentation is based on features that chrysler was using to embellish its automobiles at the time. the corners of the 61st floor are guarded by eagles, replicas of the 1929 chrysler hood ornaments. on the 31st floor the corners are replicas of the 1929 chrysler radiator caps. the chrysler was the first structure in the world to surpass the 1,000 foot threshold, but was soon to be overtaken by the empire state building as the tallest building in the world in 1931.
groundbreaking for the chrysler building was on 9/19/28. the spire, composed of 'nirosta' stainless steel, was hoisted to the top of the building on october 23, 1929, making the chrysler building the world's tallest building. van alen and chrysler enjoyed this distinction for less than a year, before the empire state building was completed. the chrysler building opened to the public on may 27, 1930. the building was renovated in 1978 at which time the granite, marble and steel entrance hall was added. the recent restoration of the spire was completed in 1995.
