what a great pair of coloring books. taro gomi, a tokyo-based illustrator whose work graces over 100 children’s books, has created two innovative coloring books, scribbles and doodles. both have the subtitle “a really giant drawing and coloring book”. and they are. both weigh in at a hefty 368 pages.

but that’s not what so wonderful about these coloring books. instead of static images for kids to fill in with color, this book is designed to awaken a child’s creativity and drawing skills. with simple instructions (“what are they saying?”, “draw feathers and a tail on this boy”, “what do you think can be making these noises?”) and nearly-blank pages, children think, draw what they want and make up their own stories. it’s a great coloring book for older children.
