ca' d'oro palace model by timothy richards
ca’ d’oro - "the house of gold" or golden house - represents one of the most beautiful palaces of the grand canal, the main waterway through the ancient city of venice, italy. it was constructed between 1428 and 1430 for the contarini family by giovanni bon and his son bartolomeo. the work of these two sculptors and architects epitomizes the gothic style in venice.
the model is made of plaster, lead, brass and gold leaf with other additional material and is highly detailed, with additional watercolor work that highlights the complex tile detail of the façade. the crown cappping the façade is cast in lead. the back wall of the water gate is pierced through with further tracery, allowing light to travel through the handmade turquoise glass. limited to 480 pieces, this piece makes a great addition to any architecture or italian history aficionados collection.
