the shaman rollerball pen & business card case was designed by timo sarpaneva for acme studios. this was a packaged set that never received extensive distribution. sarpaneva died on october 6, 2006, and unicahome has acquired the very last of these card cases and pens. you’d best snap one of fast because once they’re gone, there won’t be any more.
timo sarpaneva was a prolific and versatile finnish artist whose career spanned over five decades. he was a sculptor who preferred working with glass – one of his glass sculptures was chosen as ‘the most beautiful object of the year’ in 1954 – but he was equally skilled in working with other materials, as his shaman pen and card case both show. sarpaneva’s works grace the collections of the foremost art museums in the world. during the last ten or fifteen years of his career sarpaneva worked mainly as sculptor. contemporary sculpture is seldom made from glass, but his choice to use glass highlights the fact that sarpaneva was unfettered by expectation or convention. glass is a medium that offers some of the greatest potential & also the greatest challenges – sarpaneva’s creative capacity appeared to know no bounds.
