"battuto" is a glassmaking technique. the surface of a battuto piece is ground as if it were cut, producing small, irregular areas.
salviati's battuto vases have surfaces that are almost organic and that resemble plant or cellular structures at high magnification. it's quite striking, but the matt, translucent glass tones it down so that it won't detract from plants placed in the vase.

salviati was founded in 1859 by antonio salviati, a lawyer who wanted to revitalize venetian glassmaking. salviati glass is handmade and often emphasizes contrasts: opaque against transparent glass, matt against shiny glass.
