pale_a.mgx lamp series designed by dan yeffet of jelly lab for materialise.
the pale_a.mgx [pale a] name is derived from the greek word ‘paleo’, meaning fossilized, aged (as in palaeolithic). this design won the FNAC design purchase competition of june 2004. it symbolizes the dawn of the future of products that will one day be sold and downloaded over the internet, then 3D-printed by the customer utilizing rapid prototyping technology. (of course, then you won't need a fine service like unicahome. thankfully for us, that day is still some time off) materialise already uses this technology to some extent, designing their products with 3D modeling software and building them with their own 3D printing, or rapid prototyping technologies, facilities.
you may be wondering why materialise products are named with the *.mgx extension? *.mgx is the file extension for materialise's proprietary software. each product produced by materialise is rendered from a unique *.mgx file which accompanies your product on a cd rom. you can reproduce your product by sending the *.mgx file back to materialise.
made from epoxy.
