herman miller is bringing back another classic, the nelson miniature chests designed in 1952 by george nelson. nelson designed the chests soon after returning from his first trip to tokyo in 1951. the chests are reminiscent of japanese tansu, traditional japanese antique furniture. they were intended, in nelson’s view, to demonstrate what he liked most about japanese design – “a sense of fitness in the relationship between hand, material, use and shape.”
all chests are constructed of teak with rosewood stain and chests without a base rest on 3/8-inch-high brass glides.
tall chests have a four-star metal base painted white and fitted with adjustable glides. the metal drawer knobs are painted white to match bases and drawers are hand fitted to ensure proper alignment and smooth operation. chests with 6 drawers have white laminate tops.
