the idea for the eames molded plastic chair started many years before when the design duo wanted to construct a single shell chair from plywood. after realizing that compressed plywood did not withstand strength tests charles and ray eames scrapped the single shell idea and constructed a two piece plywood chair. the eames solved the single shell issue in the 1940’s by using plastic; zenith had been using plastic to reinforce airplane radar domes since the war and began mass producing the molded chair for herman miller in 1950.
the eames molded plastic chair is available in four different styles. the eames molded plastic side chair has a four legged base and is stackable up to 14 chairs high. the molded plastic armchair is available with to different style of bases, an eiffel tower base or a four legged base. the molded plastic rocking chair has rocking base with solid maple runners. the bases of all molded plastic chairs are chrome. all chairs are available in white, black or red. the side and arm chairs have a choice of standard glides or glides with felt.
