as featured in dwell and met home, glasbauspiel blocks by bruno taut. taut was one of the most prominent architects of the neues bauen movement. before becoming internationally famous in the mid 1920’s with his housing projects in berlin, he was a leading figure of expressionistic architecture in germany. his first building to gain widespread attention was the glass pavillion at the werkbund exhibition in cologne in 1914. the domed building, with its polygonal plan, was made entirely of colored glass building blocks. in 1920 taut translated his love for glass as a building material into a glass building-set. of all the building-sets manufactured in the early 20th century, his was the only one to be made out of this fragile and often tempermental material. now available through vitra. comes complete with box. text & images by vitra. made of colored glass that has been hand polished.
