toyo ito: “ripple. if i had to give my coffee set a name, i would call it ‘ripple,’ because water is the theme of my architecture. please imagine throwing a handful of pebbles in a pool of water. where the pebbles fall the ripples begin to spread in concentric circles, interfering with each other. on the surface of the water the difference between the intervals are softly drawn with ambiguous borders. these continuous blank spaces, expressed in japanese by the word “ma,” are my image for architectural space. water overspreads the earth and flows in human bodies. human beings are part of nature. architecture, too, is part of nature and is no more a figure of this flowing state. i designed this coffee set in abstract white ceramics to express the blank spaces that spread infinitely. and, of course, the frogs allude to water. once in japan, ceramic frog-shaped ornaments were placed at the entrances of houses as good luck symbols.”
ceramic coffee set comprising: 6 coffee cups with saucers, creamer, sugar bowl, spoon holder, 6 spoons and tray. production limited to 99 copies, plus 3 author's proofs. available exclusively through max protetch gallery, price subject to change.
